Some whiskies want to tell an epic story. This one makes a clear statement. Straight is to be taken literally here. The RYE 094 from Freimeisterkollektiv isn't a cozy evening by the fireplace where you dissect aromas for hours. It's the clean, cold moment of clarity afterward. A rye that doesn't try to be something it's not.
The Facts
RYE 094
Münsterland | 5-11 Jahre | 48,2% | Amerikanische Weißeiche
My Notes
Nose:
At first, fruity rum raisins with light vanilla. But then: this fresh, cool alcohol. Not pungent, more like it's evaporating. Very clear – almost like medicinal alcohol or glass cleaner. But not unpleasant, just clean. Over time, the fruity sweetness intensifies, bringing some plum, marzipan, and a note that almost reminds you of wine gums.
Palate
The impression is confirmed. The alcohol arrives first and picks you up. Beneath it lies the sweet rum raisin chord again, which is then quickly overtaken by a malty sweetness. Add to that grain. Combined with the sweet vanilla note, it makes you think of cereal. But the alcohol comes back a bit. Still fresh and clean. This makes the impression more fleeting than complex.
Finish
Dry and short. This is where the rye comes through most clearly. Roasted grain with a little spice.
Tradition:
The tradition of using rye for whiskey production goes back to Eastern European and German immigrants. With his Straight Rye Whiskey, Rüdiger Sasse cites American tradition and reinterprets it with regional raw materials from the Münsterland. Special Feature: A blend of 75% rye and 25% roasted malted rye. Distilled in a combination of a column still and an 1880 copper pot still.
The Aura
Why these colors? Warm Copper is the base – the roasted grain and the artisanal copper pot still. Raisin Brown stands for the fleeting, dark sweetness of the rum raisins. And Minty White? That's this fresh, cool, and clean alcohol vibe that cuts through everything.

Mein Fazit zum RYE 094
An exciting, fresh rye whisky. Super clean and precise craftsmanship. But not overly complex. The aromas are quite clear and it doesn't develop very strongly. But that doesn't have to be a flaw. It's just not a cozy whisky for long enjoyment, but rather a fine digestif after a meal. And for me, an exciting new facet.
Also clean and precise: Nikka from the Barrel

About the Kollektiv
Freimeisterkollektiv isn’t your typical bottler. It’s a stage for some of the country’s finest craft distillers—an alliance of true artisans. Rüdiger Sasse is one of them. And this rye? It’s his statement.
The Reality Check
The official notes promise depth and complexity. My experience is more immediate: fleeting, clear, honest. Where they analyze “dark chocolate,” I get “malty sweetness with a breakfast cereal vibe.” And the alcohol—the defining character, to me—is completely absent from their description. They see layers; I feel clarity. Lab vs. life.
