Port Askaig Cask Strength Batch #02 – The Islay Heavyweight

Port Askaig CS 02 Flasche

Some whiskies whisper. This one roars. Port Askaig Batch #02 is not a gentle sea breeze, but a storm of sherry and smoke. 59.1% ABV, no compromises. It doesn't want to seduce you, it wants to overwhelm you. And damn, it succeeds.

The Facts

Port Askaig Cask Strength Batch #02

Islay | NAS | 59.1% | PX, Oloroso & Refill Sherry Casks

My Notes

Nose:
Powerful. Immediately present. Roasted nuts meet heavy sherry sweetness and distinct smoke. Later it becomes a bit lighter, fruitier – jam flashes up. But the first impression is pure force.

Palate
An explosion. Smoke, sherry, toffee, and nut flood the mouth. On later tasting, it becomes more balanced – vanilla and dark sauce come through. Surprisingly drinkable despite the cask strength, but it challenges you. It tastes full, broad, and deep.

Finish
Long, warm, and lingering. The smoke remains and provides depth. Diluted, it becomes softer and drier, but loses none of its presence.

The Aura

Why these colors? Dark Ash is the foundation – the heavy, dark Islay smoke that carries everything. Deep Crimson stands for the massive sherry sweetness, the jam, and the dark sauce that form the core. And Burnt Toffee? That is the roasted nuttiness and the caramel that gives the whole thing bite.

My Verdict on Port Askaig Cask Strength Batch #02

A complex Islay with smoke and sherry finesse. A whisky with character and structure. If you are looking for delicacy, you are wrong here. If you are looking for the full Islay broadside, you will be happy.

The Official Script from Elixir Distillers

Here’s the distillery’s official version for comparison:

Nose:
Notes of lemon, roasted stone fruits, coffee, chocolate treacle, and rich, dark smoke.

Palate
Zesty ginger with chocolate and star anise. Salted citrus fruits join peat smoke, rich layers of toffee, and slightly burnt spiced biscuits.

Finish
Fresh raspberry, lemon, and cacao nibs. Long finish with peppery warmth, tarry smoke, and lingering oak spice.

The Reality Check

The distillery celebrates the bright peaks: lemon, ginger, raspberry. My experience is darker: nut, sherry, dark sauce. They describe the complexity of the details. I feel the force of the mass. Both are true – they see the potential of the casks, I experience the emotional landing in the mouth. Where they look for contrasts, I find heavy harmony.
