Ardnamurchan AD/ Mezcal Cask Release – The Scotsman Wears a Sombrero

Ardnamurchan Mezcal Whisky Flasche vor Türkis farbener Aura Visualisierung.

Mezcal casks are the final boss. Most of the time, they steamroll the whisky without mercy. But Ardnamurchan? They’re not afraid. This isn’t a timid experiment — it’s a full-on fusion. The Scotsman swapped his kilt for a sombrero — and damn, it suits him. An experiment that should have failed, yet instead throws a wild, strangely harmonious party.

The Facts

Ardnamurchan AD/ Mezcal Cask Release
Highlands | 7 Jahre | 55% | Mezcal Cask Finish

My Notes

Nose:
Forget Scotland for a moment. This is Mexico. Green agave, fruity, vegetal. The mezcal takes the lead, the whisky holds back with quiet dignity. It smells like adventure — like earth, like a night in Oaxaca.

Palate
The mezcal stays in charge. That classic, earthy smoke and unmistakable agave fruitiness. At times, it tastes almost like pure Mexican spirit. But then, very slowly, the whisky steps in. With authority. A pleasant heat, like chili in dark chocolate. Later, it softens, almost wine-like — like pale grape must. A wild ride.

Finish
Long and warming. Once the agave steps aside, you finally realize: “Ah — it is a whisky after all.” Complex, layered, and definitely not for beginners.

The Aura

Warum diese Farben? Earthy Clay is the soil of Oaxaca — dry, dusty, mineral. Agave Green stands for the fresh, vegetal note of the mezcal that runs through the whisky. And Smoky Teal? That’s the meeting point of Scottish peat and Mexican smoke — a color that shouldn’t exist, yet somehow fits perfectly here.

My Verdict

A bold crossover that actually works. If you’re after classic Scotch, this isn’t it. But if you want to find out how beautifully smoke and agave can dance together, you need to try this dram. Wild, different, brilliant.

The Official Script

Here are the official notes from the distillery — very detailed and distinctly “green”:

Nose: Green, grassy, and vegetal with an immediate mezcal influence. As it opens up: crisp Granny Smith apples, green bananas, and resilient, ashy smoke.

Palate Bright and herbal, with notes of eucalyptus, chalky minerals, and sea breeze. A bold mix of olive brine, salty capers, and smooth parsley. Oily in texture with an earthy backbone.

Finish Soft, whispering smoke that lingers with a creamy, sweet aftertaste and a final note of earthy depth.

The Reality Check

With finishes like this, you often hear the word “subtle.” Not here. Ardnamurchan lets the mezcal off the leash. Where other distilleries try to protect the whisky, Ardnamurchan embraces the fusion. They talk about “Granny Smith apples,” I taste “chili chocolate.” But at the core, we agree on one thing: this is wild.
